Catching Up: Kai's Birthday Cake

After our trip to Samburu for Kai's birthday, we returned home and continued the celebration.  Namely, Mama had to make a cake!  Kai had told me months ago that he wanted a cake with treasure on it.  That seemed a bit vague to me, so I asked for specifics, to which he said he wanted a treasure in a cave with a dragon.  Well, that was definitely more specific!

My mother-in-law had sent over some special items to aid Kai's cake.  In actuality they were sent over last year in an attempt to be used on his cake a year ago, but the stuff didn't get to us until a couple months ago because of a whole host of complicating factors.  But the timing was actually quite perfect!  She sent gold sprinkles and a gem-shaped candy mold.  So we made candy for the very first time and gathered everything together for decorating a treasure chest on Kai's cake.

This is what I pulled off:

Notice that Kai's name is formed from the smoke coming from the dragon's nostrils.  Kai thought that was pretty awesome :)

Yet again, it was a rather time-consuming endeavor to make my boy a birthday cake, but he was absolutely thrilled and that's why I keep doing this.

We invited one friend over to join us for cake, which was perfect.  It's a strange time to be celebrating birthdays and we're thankful we could have someone over to help it feel at least a little like a party.  It was super low-key and everyone was happy!

It looked a bit different than normal, but I'm fairly certain that Kai will always remember his 7th birthday!
